Summary[edit]
DescriptionFires and smoke in northwest India (MODIS 2015-11-05).jpg |
English: In late October 2015 the skies over the Indian state of Punjab were covered with smoke as hundreds of fires burned across the region. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on October 29.
Each red hot spot marks an area where the thermal sensor aboard the instrument detected unusually warm temperatures generally associated with fires. Thick plumes of smoke drifted from the hotspots, creating an overhead haze that obscured much of the land from view. The fires are likely agricultural in origin, deliberately set to manage land. Farmers often set fires to their fields to clear them before the growing season, which begins in Punjab in November. |
