A group of the Royal Marine Artillery pose with 15-inch howitzer shells, one painted "RMA", another "Guarantee for Peace".

Summary[edit]

Description
English: A group of the Royal Marine Artillery, identifiable by their grenade collar badges. They are posed in a group photograph, sitting on two large shells, used in their 15-inch Howitzers, which are painted with the words 'RMA' and 'Guarantee for Peace'. They clearly, and perhaps rightly, felt that the heavy artillery were of vital importance in this type of warfare.

Two of the men sitting on the shells are smoking, one has a pipe, the other a cigarette. During the war, soldiers were issued with up to 20 ounces of tobacco a week. There was a marked change from pipe-smoking to cigarettes, as cigarettes were easier to cope with in these conditions.
[Original reads: 'A fine advertisement, isn't it?.']
