iritby those who benefit by it. Effect of the War on Hunting. The popular idea is that during the war period, with alarge part of the male population in the army, the number ofsportsmen would be greatly reduced, and that for this reasonthe game would enjoy some relief from shooting, — even thatthe situation would amount to almost a partially closedseason. The following table of figures, representing two or more ofthe principal cities or towns in the several counties, shows thatthe average number of licenses issued in these towns duringthe year 1917 was 697, against an average in 1918 for thesesame towns of 690. These figures show that there has beenvery little change in the number of sportsmen. It also arguesthat with the return of the soldiers to private life many menwill take up outdoor sports who never interested themselves inthem before, and that the drain on the wild life of the Com-monwealth during the next generation will undoubtedly bemuch heavier than in the generation past.
