and day, to be sure water was run-ning through each jar and that the eggs did not bunch up andsmother. The average temperature of the water during thehatching period was 57°; period of hatching, thirteen days. The capacity of the battery at Palmer is 42,500,000 eggs.Immediately after hatching begins, distribution should bestarted, else the tank will be too full of fish and the screenbecome clogged, though smelt, being more lively and betterswimmers, can be held longer in the tank without loss than caneither yellow or pike perch. Of the 110,000,000 eggs received at the hatchery there werehatched and planted 76,125,000 with about 30 per cent loss.In view of the fact that the work is still experimental (last yearbut a few ounces of eggs were handled, merely to determinewhether the fish could be stripped and eggs hatched) the num-ber of fry produced can be considered very satisfactory. Withthe necessary facilities it would be an easy matter to hatch200,000,000 instead of only a few fish.

PUBLIC DOCUMENT — No. 25. 145 Experiment in collecting and shipping Spawn on Burlap. —Last year the smelt spawn was collected by placing the burlapson the bottom of the river and allowing the smelt to depositthe spawn thereon naturally, with the result that the eggs werelaid unevenly and a large percentage infertile. Attempts weremade this year to devise a more satisfactory method by strip-ping the fish, fertilizing the spawn and spreading it in thequantity desired. It was done in this way. The spawn imme-diately on being taken from the fish is brought to the spreader, who is stationed before a tank of water 8 inches deep, of justthe size to hold horizontally the sheets of burlap. These are16f by 20 inches in size, with a strip of lath tacked at twoopposite ends to facilitate handling. Quick action is required,or the eggs, fresh from the strippers, will lump together and bespoiled. A small quantity of eggs is mixed in a bucket of waterand poured into the tank. The eggs settl
