pounding before she got off. The Essex, however, was to be revenged at a later date. Whenit was realized what the Arkansas had accomplished, the Confeder-ates determined to use her to recover possession of Baton Rouge.A land force moved to co-operate with her, but from the hour theram left Vicksburg she was the subject of disaster. First one partand then another of her engines gave out and had to be repaired ina rude way. She ran aground several times, sprung a leak twice,and was once on fire. Just above Baton Rouge her engines wereagain disabled, and she had to make fast to the bank. While inthis condition, the Essex and other crafts advanced upon her andopened a hot fire. The career of the ram was ended. She was atonce abandoned, several fires started to consume her, and when theflames were well under way she was turned adrift to go to destruc-tion. The Essex had the credit of her destruction, and the monsterwhich had caused so much anxiety for long months was finally outof the way.
