lantry on field ofbattle at Pleasant Hill; was breveted Lieutenant-Colonel, March 13, 1865, for gallant and meritorious services during the war. Heldpositions on staffs of Generals Banks, Canby and Sheridan. Afterthe close of the war served with General Sheridan as Assistant Ad-jutant-General throughout the Indian campaigns, taking an activepart with General Custer. Resigned 1871; in 1876 was appointedConsul at Florence, Italy. Received from the King of Italy theorder of the Crown of Italy, for discovering and securing the arrestof the worst and most formidable band of criminals operating inEurope and the United States. Resigned in 1882 to accept theGovernorship of Montana, which was offered him by PresidentArthur. Resigned in 1884, having been appointed First Assistant-Postmaster-General. Was awarded June 30, 1-877, a life-saving gold medal of the FirstClass, under an act of Congress, for heroic daring in saving lifeat the peril of his own, on the yacht Mohawk, which was lostin 1876.
