There are no higher state forms among the coast tribes, asin civilized lands; no union among tribes; no feudal powernor vassals; no monarchy, nothing absolute; no taxation, nomonopoly. Some of the interior tribes formerly had trib-utes and kingly monopoly of certain products. VII. Fetich Doctors. They still exist, but it can scarcely be said that they are aclass. They have no organization; they have honor only intheir own districts, unless they be called specially to ministerin another place. They have power to condemn to death oncharge of causing sickness. In their ceremonies they sendthe people to sing, dance, play, and beat drums, and theyspot their bodies with their medicines. Any one maychoose the profession for himself; fetich doctors demandlarge pay for their services.

He is provided witha house and food for two weeks, or as much longer as he maywish to stay. On departing he is given a present. Whatever rules there areare handed down as tradition, by word of mouth.
