BIOGRAPHY

A prolific sculptor much favoured by the Salazar regime, Duarte created numerous monuments to historical and religious figures, spread all over Portugal and in the colonies.

He also taught at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts for some 25 years. In his heyday in the 1940's and 1950's, he was awarded many prizes by the cultural organizations of the regime and represented Portugal at international art events such as the Venice and S. Paulo Biennials.

On his time off from the official propaganda commissions, he created pieces of a more personal character such as the above female nude.

The town of Caldas da Raínha, where Duarte was born, has a museum dedicated to his work (Museu Atelier António Duarte) comprising over 1,000 items, including sketches and work drawings of many of his public monuments.

Licensing[edit]

Portugal

Portuguese copyright law allows the use of works permanently installed at public locations. The law explicitly mentions buildings and sculptures as examples of such works (§75(2)q). "Use" includes taking a photograph of such a work and publishing it (§68). However, according to the Berne three-step test, the allowed uses must not conflict with a normal exploitation of the work, nor unreasonably prejudice the legitimate interests of the rights holder (§75(4)).

It is also required to identify name of the author, with no exceptions ("wherever possible", as per §76(a)).
