Description

At the Regiment Basic School in Lusaka, Zambia, students look out a classroom window. USAID funds the Community Health and Nutrition, Gender and Education Support program here to help Zambia’s Ministry of Education train teachers and community leaders, at this school and elsewhere, with a particular emphasis on nutrition and health issues. The Agency also provides scholarships to orphans and other vulnerable children—of the Regiment School’s 1,200 students, 300 are orphans—and builds partnerships between schools and communities to promote health and HIV prevention activities. USAID also helped to provide safe water to the Regiment School. The water supply was once so limited, the principal had to ask children to carry their own water from home. Now, students have steady access to clean water. July 3, 2007.
