At the present daythere are more articles of fishing tacklemade especially for black bass than for allother game fishes combined. This Is proofthat It Is the most popular and, all thingsconsidered, the best game fish of America. The Charm of Salmon fishlng, the grandest sport In the Angling , ^ . ° ^ curriculum or anglmg, is now an expensiveluxury. There is but little free waterreadily accessible, for all the best pools areIn the possession of wealthy clubs. Thebold leap of the salmon, when hooked, theexciting play of the fish on the rod, andthe successful gafling, are as so many stan-zas of an epic poem. Trout fishing Is asummer Idyl. ■to CQ The Black Bass Black-bass fishing combines, in a meas-ure, the heroic potentialities of salmon fish-ing with the charms of trout fishing. Theleap of the bass is no less exciting than thatof the salmon, and is oftener repeated, while in stream fishing the pastoral fea-tures of trout fishing are experienced andenjoyed. The leap of a hooked fish is always an The Leap ofexciting episode to the angler with red ^^^^*^blood in his veins—exciting because as anoffset to its probable capture there is thevery possible contingency of its escape bythrowing out the hook, or by breakingaway. So with each leap of the bass thehopes and fears of the angler are constantlyexercised, while his pulses quicken and hisenthusiasm is aroused. Game fishes oftenleap a few inches above the surface in play,or to catch a low-flying insect; but whenhooked they vault to a height commensuratewith their agility and muscular ability. They do not leap so high, however, as iscommonly supposed. A tarpon will leap
