sometimes with photo-Illustrations of thefishes concerned, which, however, onlyserved to make confusion worse con-founded. For Instance, I remember onecommunication with an illustration of theladyfish, but which was stated In the textto be the bonefish and not the ladyfish. This confusion of names arose originallyfrom the fact that the names bone-fish andbony-fish were applied indiscriminately bynative fishermen to both ladyfish and ten-pounder; Indeed, the names ladyfish, ten-pounder, and their synonyms bonefish andbony-fish date back to our earliest history. In Natal It Is called springer. Their scientific names were both be-stowed by Linnaeus more than two hundredyears ago. Catesby, In 1737, called theladyfish of the Bahamas bonefish, whileCaptain William Dampler, one of the earlyexplorers, called the bony-fish of the Baha-mas ten-pounder. As just stated, they belong to entirely Nomenclaturedifferent families. The ladyfish (Albidavulpes) ^ or bonefish, as it may be called,is the only fish in its family (Alhulida)^while the ten-pounder (Elops sauriis), orbony-fish, belongs to the tarpon family(Elopida), and like the tarpon has a bonyplate between the branches of the lower jaw(hence bony-fish), which bone does not ex-ist in the ladyfish. The proper identifica-tion of the two fishes is really easier thanto distinguish between the two species ofblack bass, or to differentiate a pike from apickerel. The most pronounced difference is in the Differentiationconformation of the mouth. The ladyfishhas an overhanging, pig-like snout, themouth being somewhat underneath, whilethe ten-pounder has a terminal mouth, thatis, with the upper and lower lips meetingin front, the same as in
