Inschrift zur Faustsage am Gasthäus Löwen in Staufen

Anno 1539 ist im Leuen zu Staufen Doctor Faustus
so ein wunderbarlicher Nigromanta (Schwarzkünstler) gewesen
elendiglich gestorben und es geht die Sage
der obersten Teufel einer der Mephistopheles,
den er in seinen Lebzeiten lang nur seinen
Schwager genannt, habe ihm, nachdem der
Pakt von 24 Jahren abgelaufen das
Genick abgebrochen und seine arme
Seele der ewigen Verdammnis überantwortet'

• Beschreibung: In der Fauststadt Staufen im Breisgau soll der von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe im Drama Faust Faust, der Tragödie erster Teil beschriebene, sagenumwobene Alchemist, Astrologe und Schwarzkünstler, während der Renaissance gelebt haben und verstorben sein. Dr. Johann Georg Faustus soll vom verschuldeten Burgherren Anton von Staufen als Goldmacher angestellt worden sein. Im Jahr 1539 soll Faust in seinem Zimmer im Gasthaus Löwen (am Marktplatz) bei einer Explosion, wahrscheinlich bei einem alchemistischen Experiment, ums Leben gekommen sein. Davon berichtet eine Inschrift an der Fassade des Gasthauses.
