Summary[edit]

Description

Fault scarps are scars left behind by earthquakes in the past, and betray their presence by a telltale step in the landscape. This photo show a fault scarp in the Italian Apennines.

New research using data from Apennine fault scarps has linked the movement of rock deep under the Earth with the behaviour of fault lines near the surface, giving a better understanding of how processes deep in the Earth's crust can trigger earthquakes.
