Notes NB On display as at March 1963 and described as "Fabric from Baron von Riochtofen's plane "Red Eagle" shot down by the Canadian Captain Brown. Von Richtofen, known as the "Red Knight", was leader of the famous "Red Circus". Colours are normal pre-dyed lozenge pattern as used by German aircraft industry in 1917-1918. See correspondence on object file. Donors served during WW1- 2nd Lieut. WW Averill 13-2278 enlisted with the Auckland Mounted Rifles and served as a Chaplain, while his brother 2nd Lieut. Leslie CL Averill 46219, served with the NZ Rifle Brigade (1918-1919). receiving the Military Cross for bravery at Bapaume, and was later the first New Zealander to Averill was the first to enter the town of Le Quesnoy from a scaling ladder. In Le Quesnoy Averill helped round up over 700 prisoners.
