Summary[edit]
DescriptionF4D-1 VF-162 CVA-11 tank ref probe NAN8-61.jpg | A U.S. Navy Douglas F4D-1 Skyray of fighter squadron VF-162 Hunters, Carrier Air Group 6 (CVG-6), approaching the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CVA-11) during a deployment to the Mediterranean Sea from 3 August 1961 to 1 March 1962. Note the refueling method on the F4D-1: as the probe-and-drouge refueling method had not been invented when the F4D was designed it was later equipped with a drop tank that had an inflight refueling probe. The drawback of this eqipment was, of course, that the plane could not be refueled anymore, when the drop tanks had been jettisoned. |
