Ex-Porto, Portugal tram 167, repainted as British Columbia Electric Railway 30 (a similar type of streetcar), inside the carbarn of the Fraser Valley Historical Railway Society, in Cloverdale, Surrey, B.C., Canada. The photo was taken on the opening day of the society's Heritage Railway Interurban, from Cloverdale to Sullivan, June 23, 2013. The streetcar now lettered as BCER 30 was built in Porto by the Companhia Carris de Ferro do Porto (Porto Tramways Company, CCFP) in the 1930s, based on older designs by the American company J.G. Brill. After retirement, it was brought to the U.S. in 1985 by Gales Creek Enterprises, who sold it to Portland (Oregon) businessmen Bill Naito and Sam Naito. (Note: There is some evidence suggesting the car "167" that came to the U.S. may not have been the car that was running in service with that fleet number in the early 1980s, and it is possible that Porto transit agency STCP renumbered a different streetcar as "167" before shipment to the U.S. – something that was known to have taken place with at least one or two other Porto trams sold to overseas interests, such as car "201" [really 210] now at the Oregon Electric Railway Museum in Brooks, Oregon, but this question remains unresolved.) In 1989, the Naito brothers traded it with the government of British Columbia for ex-Hong Kong tram 12, which B.C. had acquired after Expo '86 (where it had been on display). Volunteers restored it between fall 1989 and June 1990 as BCER #30, which had been a similar type of streetcar, and it was displayed at the B.C. Museum of Transportation in 1991 and 1992. Later in 1992 or in '93, B.C. Transit donated Porto 167 to the Greater Victoria Electric Railway Society, who hoped to run it one day on a then-proposed heritage streetcar line in Victoria (an idea that never came to fruition), and the car was in storage most of the time. In 2002, it was moved to Surrey under an initial 10-year lease secured by the Fraser Valley Historical Railway Society. FVHRS later named the car Cloverbelle. In 2015, the car was sold to a group planning a streetcar line in Belmont, North Carolina. |
