That Her Majesty might not be incon-venienced by the rattle of iron tyres on the metals,her special saloon was provided with woodenwheels. On Plate XVI is shown a Great WesternEoyal saloon, which was used regularly by QueenVictoria in later years. H.M. King Edward VII.travelled in this saloon from Paddington to Windsoron January, 1901, to attend the funeral of hisroyal mother; and on May 20, 1910, the bodyof King Edward was borne in the same vehiclefrom London to Windsor for interment. Stephensons liad demandedpayment for them before delivery, and failing toobtain it, they were altered to suit the 7 feetgauge ; and thus two of Goochs first engines wereof his own design and built under his own superin-tendence, little dreaming how long they ultimatelywould be in his care. Mr. Goochs first engines were of the Fury type, some with 7 feet driving wheels, and otherswith 6 feet drivers. In the first the heating areawas 700 square feet and in the second 608 squarefeet. In one feature some of Goochs earlier engineswere unique ; they were fitted with steel tyres.Steel was then dear and could not be afforded forengine and tender bodies. The results were notice-able in the life of the wheels, some of which ran300,000 miles before being retyred.
