On 17 April 1983 Princess Diana and Prince Charles arrived in New Zealand with their infant son Prince William. The fashion-icon princess was treated like a rock star, and media and public alike were obsessed with her clothes and hairstyle as she went about her official outings in New Zealand. When she and Prince Charles posed for an official photo shoot with Prince William they faced a battery of cameras, and images of the event flashed all over the world. People pored over pictures of her wearing designer gowns and appearing at glitzy public events. Looking back on the official events lists for this Royal Tour it is apparent that it wasn’t all about glamour, even if that’s how it seemed at the time. In fact one can only admire the stoicism of Princess Diana and Prince Charles as they toured factories, watched a Fire Service display, walked through countless towns to meet their adoring public, and attended everything from trotting meetings to garden parties. Shown here is the programme for their first official event – and one that would have been close to the Princess’s heart given her love of children. Eden Park in Auckland was the venue for a wide ranging display of performing arts by children from schools all over the city. The Royal Party spent the morning checking out the artistic talent of hundreds of children.
