Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Estate Gates. Known locally as the "Green Gates" for obvious reasons.
  • The gates were erected in 1822 by Clanranald who owned Glen House and the Arisaig Estate. The gates were made in Tain and shipped by crate to Inverness, then down the brand new Caledonian Canal to Fort William followed by a sea trip around the coast to Arisaig.
  • Sometime early last century the estate changed hands and the new owners knocked down Glen House and used the stone to build Arisaig House (NZ692848). Originally the gates would have been closer to the house but they chose not to move the gates to the new house and moved them to their present location instead.
  • Within the last decade a car crashed into the gates and the present owners, a French syndicate, had the gates dismantled and refurbished.
