rovistas de sus correspondientes basas y suscapiteles respectivos, por los cuales se extiende á manera defriso y coronándolos, colgante imposta de anchos dientes desierra, preparados para recibir sin duda como repisas, decora-ción que ó no se labró nunca ó ha desaparecido; enriqueciendolos fondos que resultan en los intercolumnios de esta zona, yproclamando así la real munificencia cual la época en que hubode ser primitivamente construida esta portada,—bien que nocon el orden que debieran, destacan con algunos rosetones enrelieve, los castillos y los leones, que eran armas reales y sólotenían derecho á usar los príncipes, recordando por esto solo,aquella hermosa portada, inmediata á la Puerta del Sarmentalen la inestimable Catedral de Burgos, que da ingreso al claustropor el crucero. Como nota discordante, y afeando el gracioso acuerdo conque, á pesar de todo, en su conjunto se ofrece hasta aquí estaentrada,—la puerta propiamente dicha, es barroca y de mal SANTANDEK

SANTANDER.—Puerta de ingreso á la Catedral por el Claustro 34^ SANTANDER gusto, por lo cual, y sin detenernos siquiera á deplorar el censu-rable empeño con que los siglos xvii y xviii mancharon intran-sigentes, y sin necesidad con frecuencia, las obras de tiemposanteriores,—^penetraremos en el templo, qué convida con su re-ligioso recogimiento y con el háUto perfumado que por la puertaexhala. Tres naves paralelas forman con diversa altitud y an-chura el buque de la iglesia, que aparece á nuestras miradasenvuelto en tenue claridad, más intensa y viva á intervalos porla luz que derrama alguna capilla sobre la uniforme tonalidadambiente, y por los rayos que se filtran luminosos á través delcortinaje de los ventanales en la nave real, que es la másalta. No ofrece ya en nuestros días ostensible todo su desarro-llo, cortada á los pies por un muro que adultera sus propor-ciones primitivas, como adulterando su fisonomía, á despechode la inteligente restauración acometida p
