El escudo actual del pueblo fue aprobado en 1.977 y es igual que el original con la inclusión de las armas de Castilla y León. Éstos símbolos se añadieron por haber quedado como realenga tras haberla hecho villa Felipe IV al conseguir su independencia de Baeza en 1.628. El escudo original es el de Álvar Sánchez de Rus, otorgado por el rey Alfonso XI en 1.340 al nombrarlo Caballero de la Banda por su arrojo y denuedo en la batalla del Salado contra los benimerines. Su descripción es la siguiente: "Sobre campo de oro, banda de sable engolada en sierpes de sinople, y bordura de gules con la inscripción R.P.RURADENSIUM en oro. Y en la cimera, como parte superior, la corona real cerrada". Los gules o rojo representan la valentía y nobleza de los ruseños que testimonian el amor a la patria y en defensa de los oprimidos. La corona real significa la adhesión a la monarquía y unidad de España. La parte central tiene su origen en las armas que recibió Álvar Sánchez al ser nombrado Caballero de la Orden de la Banda y usaron sus descendientes: banda negra con cabezas de sierpes verdes en campo de oro. El escudo oficial figura en la fachada del Ayuntamiento.
