Español: El 15 de septiembre de 1521, el Rey CARLOS V mediante Real Cédula expedida en Burgos, otorgó a la población de Panamá, el título de Ciudad y un escudo de armas. Posteriormente, mediante Real Cédula expedida en Lisboa el 3 de diciembre de 1581, FELIPE II le otorgó el título de "Muy Noble y Leal Ciudad", en agradecimiento por los servicios prestado contra rebeldes a la Corona.
A finales de 1519, se ordenó al capitán DIEGO DE ALBITRES que poblara nuevamente a Nombre de Dios, fundada por DIEGO DE NICUESA, a fin de contar con un una población que sirviera de base en el norte del Istmo, toda vez que Acla no brindaba las facilidades adecuadas. Mediante Real Cédula de 1537, el Emperador CARLOS V otorgó a Nombre de Dios el título de "ciudad", y el 7 de diciembre de ese mismo año, le otorgó un escudo de armas con la divisa "In nómine meo foveat me" (Ayúdame en mi nombre). Entre ambas ciudades, ubicada cada una en el Atlántico y el Pacífico, se estableció un "Camino Real" para el transporte de las diversas especies que pasaban por el Istmo. El Gobernador dispuso pasar a las nuevas ciudades, los habitantes y haberes de Acla y Santa María de La Antigua. De igual forma, se dispuso pasar a Panamá la sede del Darién, lo que efectuó el Obispo Fray VICENTE PEDRAZA, según lo autorizó el Papa LEON X, mediante Breve "Apostolatum Officium" de 7 de diciembre de 1520. |
