Summary
[edit]DescriptionEntrance to the Thames and Severn Canal from the River Thames - geograph.org.uk - 976914.jpg |
English: Junction of the disused Thames and Severn Canal with the River Thames at Lechlade, Gloucestershire. In the middle of this photo is the entrance to the closed Thames and Severn Canal and its first lock. Behind Round House Cottage on the left can just be seen the Round House. This was originally the lock-keeper's house. There were several of this unique design along the canal. These premises have now been acquired in connection with the proposed restoration of the canal.
Today this point is more or less the head of navigation on the River Thames although a very long time ago boats could progress beyond here to the town of Cricklade and a little further upstream. The water levels now mean this is no longer possible except for canoes. |
