Entoloma variabile Peck Image location: Unorganized Territory of South Oxford Co., Maine, USA Habitat: Scattered among sphagnum in a boggy area. Under birch, balsam fir, red maple, spruce, white pine, and cinnamon ferns. Lactarius helvus and Bogbodia uda were frequent in the immediate area. Pileus: 19-43 mm Stipe: 57-118 × 3-5 mm Microscopic characters: Spores 9-11 × 8.5-11 microns, 4 (occasionally 5-6) angular in face view with conspicuous hilar appendage up to 2.5 microns, cubic in polar view. Pileipellis and pileitrama consist up of long, narrow, cylindrical cells. No inflated elements. The pileal context is extremely thin, 1-2 mm max until the lamellae begin. Cheilocystidia present among basidia, cylindrical to very slightly subcapitate. Basidia 4-spored. Pleurocystidia absent. Odor: Indistinct/none Other: Some specimens develop red-brown spotting/staining (not spore drop from other frbs).
