Summary[edit]

Description Being struck by or entangled in deck machinery is a leading cause of hospitalized injuries in commercial fishing. One particular danger identified by fishermen was entanglement in capstan winches on purse seine vessels. NIOSH researchers worked with commercial fisherman like skipper Bud Marrese to develop an emergency stop button that could be retrofitted on winches to reduce the severity of entanglements. This invention was commercialized in 2007 and is now available nationwide from Kolstrand Marine Equipment of Seattle, WA.
