Monroe City, capital of Monroe co., Mich., 13 miles fromErie, on the Raisin river, 2 miles from the lake. It is advan-tageously situated for commercial and manufacturing pur-poses, the river alFording great water-power. A spaciouscanal extends from the town to the lake. Superior building-stone and sulphur-springs are found in the vicinity. Severalplank roads terminate here. A splendid courthouse, andother public buildings adorn the place. Pop., 1850, 2,813. DETROIT CITY, Port of entry, and capital of Wajoie co., Mich., 22 milesabove, 352 miles west from Buffalo. It occupies a pleasantand commanding situation on the west bank of Detroit river, 18miles from LakeErie, and 8 miles from Lake St. Clair. Thuslocated between two great lakes, Huron and Erie, upon bothof which its vessels and steamboats carry on an extensivetrade through all the upper lakes and the eastern states, itis an important metropolis of the western states, and«s destinedto occupy a still higher rank among the great western martsof trade.
