English: This is the first high-level meeting between Mexico and Myanmar in four decades of diplomatic relations, which shows the Mexican interest in getting closer to a Southeast Asian country that is immersed in a stage of important political and economic changes.
President Peña Nieto expressed his wide appreciation to the Minister, to whom he congratulated on the progress made in the democratization process of his country, as well as on economic expectations. In particular, he welcomed the Peace Conference held last August in that Asian country, highlighting the positive effect it will have on the peace and national reconciliation process in Myanmar. Aung San Suu Kyi is an international symbol of peaceful struggle and a leading figure in the pro-democracy movement in Myanmar. Throughout her tireless work for democracy, she received broad international support. In 1991 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Aung San Suu Kyi is leading the efforts for dialogue, cooperation and reconciliation between military leaders and civil society, together with political and economic actors to achieve peace in this country. She has been an important voice for human rights; She is an emblematic defender of the fight for democratization for which she has been awarded internationally. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. |
