Comique. As a promised sequel to Louise and the product of the composer who had been acclaimedby enthusiastic friends as the greatest successor of Gounod, the Parisian public had displayed great interest in it, but thecritics had not been deceived. They declared it to be ob-scure in purpose, undramatic, and much inferior in melodicinvention to its predecessors. It turned out to be all thesethings and more. The natural curiosity of a public whichhad given a large measure of admiration to Louise, thedesperate need of Mr. Gatti to provide a sensation for theseason, the combined popularity of Miss Farrar and Mr.Caruso, all these failed to win for Charpentiers opera whatmight even be dignified by the term succes destime. It wasa failure, dragged its tedious length through five perform-ances, and sank into the pit of oblivion. It was performedunder the direction of Giorgio Polacca, with the followingcast: Julien Enrico Caruso LouiseLa Beaute La Jeune Fille y Geraldine Farrar LAieuleLa Fille

Julien is the same poet who figures in Louise, andthe action opens in his room in the Villa Medici, in Rome.
