Summary
[edit]DescriptionEnglish Warship of the Cinque Ports (1280) (50907689143).jpg | A model of an English Warship of the Cinque Ports (1280) at the Science Museum, South Kensington, November 2008. The Confederation of the Cinque Ports comprised a series of ports (originally five but later more) in Kent and Sussex established by a Royal Charter in 1155 that obliged the ports to maintain ships and crew that would be available for use by the King in time of war (a sort of Naval Reserve), in return for which the ports gained many privileges. The origins of this system go back to Anglo-Saxon times and the term Cinque Ports was already in use by 1100. The Confederation still exists but for ceremonial purposes only. |
