The coffin fromwliicli the above fac-simile is taken is 7 ft. in lengthoutside, and 6 ft. inside, IGifi. in de))th, and IH in.in width inside. The skeletons have been care-fully removed to the apartment of )Mr. Noble, intlie Castle, and the coffins, having been raised, arenow standing in the yard. They are very massive,and weigh each about two tons. The inscription,it will be seen, does not furnish us with any exactdate, but, as we know that the Romans evacuatedBritain A D. 450, up to which period, and for up-wards of 300 years before, the sixth legion was sta-tioned at York, we are certain that these coffinsmust be at least thirteen hundred years old, andmay possibly belong to a more remote period. Itis supposed that the place where they were foundwas the site of the old Roman road, which extend-ed from Aldborough, through York, to Hesliugton,&c. and that the coffins were bmied by the wayside.
