Then you shall see it now, I answered quickly,and in a moment Mercedes was gliding along theembankment and turned at right angles to theTiber, plunging into a maze of narrow streets. The Pantheon, I announced as we paused beforethe sixteen granite columns which support itsmassive front. Again we dived into the narrowstreets and threaded our way into south, andancient Rome. I was pleased to find that mymemory of the intricate knot of old streets inthis quarter remained clear, and save for oneslight slip I was able to steer Mercedes withouta mistake through one narrow street after another,and emerge this time beside a ruined arch.
