Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Elmwood-Anderson Apartments, 572 Elmwood Avenue at Anderson Place, Buffalo, New York, November 2020. A contributing property to the Elmwood West Historic District, this four-story apartment building dates to 1903 and exemplifies both the Queen Anne style of architecture and the general type of apartment building commonly erected in Buffalo around the turn of the century. The predominant architectural feature are the majestic bay windows extending the full height of the building on both façades, decorated with foliate reliefs between floors. The entrances sport Classical detailing such as engaged Ionic-Tuscan columns and sidelights flanking the door, with recessed balconies occupying the stories above. Splayed lintels feature prominently on many of the windows outside the bays. Originally luxury apartments, the building was known as The Kenilworth from the time of its opening through 1976, when they were purchased by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and reopened as government-subsidized affordable housing. In 1998, they once again passed into the hands of a private development company who once again are offering the apartments for market rates.
