NPS/Patrick Myers In spring, elk herds are still sometimes observed from the park entrance road in early morning or evening. As visitation increases in May, they tend to move farther into the grasslands. For your safety and theirs, pull off into designated pullouts along the road, and do not attempt to approach them. In this herd, a large bull is visible grazing to the right. Elk bulls shed their antlers in spring as a new set of velvet-covered antlers begin to grow. Herds of elk grazing in front of dunes and snowcapped mountains are another reason Great Sand Dunes inspires people with its natural diversity! |
