Object history Provenance: Commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie at the Royal Academy Exhibition in London, 1858. The price was 9,000 francs. The painting was hung in the Emperor's London residence. 1870: After the fall of the Second Empire transferred to the French Embassy i London. 1911 (?): Allegedly bequeathed to the nursing home in England where the former French ambassador died (it has been impossible to identify an ambassador with that year and place of death, however). Sold (?) at auction, May 28, 2001. Sold (?) at auction, March 5, 2003. Sold (?) at auction, March 2, 2004. Sold at Lauritz.com (lot no. 827022) on October 18, 2006.
