East Carolina Teachers Training School. 41 III. Community Singing. One hour each week is given to community singing by theentire school. During this hour the best popular songs aresung in the best possible manner; folk songs of all nations,patriotic songs, glee club numbers, and solos. The community hour is a great force for unifying the schooland all students are required to attend. It has been part of thepublic school music since 1910. PIANO The aim of this department is to teach the pupil to knowand appreciate good music. The value of this subject in a teachers college lies, first, inthe use a teacher can make of her piano training in fosteringcommunity spirit, and second, in the need of our communitiesfor school teachers who also give piano lessons. It is the purpose of this department to give thorough instruc-tion in the fundamentals of music, and to this end a course isoffered in Elements of Music, Ear Training, Theory, Historyof Music and practice teaching, under supervision.
