Even this rapid increase was notsuiificient to meet the growing demand for electric light, and a newtwo-story brick station, 50 by 70 ft. in ground area was erected ad-joining the old one in the early months of 1887. This new stationwas designed for twenty Armington & Sims engines of 150 hp each,and forty Edison No. 20 bipolar dynamos. Two of these dynamoswere belted to each engine, and were operated in series on the three-wire system, with approximately 250 volts on the outside wires.This station was started in June, 1887, with seven of the engines andfourteen of the dynamos just named. Rating these fourteen dynamosat 60 kw each gives the capacity of the new station as 840 kw at thestart In order to reach the north end of the city a second station wasbuilt shortly after the first and consisted of a two-story
