ailway Journal 183 3 in. wide were welded to the plate supporting the endsof the rails, to prevent the heads of the old rails fromcracking and breaking off, which frequently happenswhen the supports are not used. In connection with the welding work, a new type ofportable turnout and passing track has been developedin St. Louis to prevent welding on single track frominterfering with car schedules. This construction isportable as an assembled unit. Whenever the joints in-side the turnout are completed, one car of the welding New Shop Equipment for D. U. R. In connection with its extensive shop development atHighland Park, the Detroit (Mich.) United Railway,will install the following equipment: One No. 2 Hilles& Jones single-end power punch with a throat depth of30 in. and a capacity of punching a 1-in. hole through1-in. material; one No. 6 Bertsch & Company i-in. platebending roll; one 3-ft. x 9-ft. Ferguson oil-burning fur-nace for heating material for the bulldozer; one No. 28
