canbe conceived from one instance in which this verySan Francisco bus philanthropy was used as proofpositive that the bus was cheaper and better than anystreet car could be. The bus protagonist, we learned,got his idea from a newspaper clipping which weespied on the wall of his office. This clipping hada line-up of the buses referred to in our article overthe cheery caption San Francisco Municipal Busesa Huge Success. The article gave no costs whateverbut did say the buses were giving fine service andmaking money for the city. To some minds all intakeis clear profit. That seems to have been the case withour interlocutor so far as buses are concerned. It wasa hard task to convince him that the city, throughits own railway, was really conducting a charity fora select few of its suburbanites and that the citizensas a whole had to foot the bill.
