EMORY Assistant Engineer Maintenance of Way, Pittsburgh (Pa.)Railways Some of the methods of our company in track con-struction work may be of interest. The following briefdescription, together with the views of the work whilein progress and some labor-saving machinery used,will give an idea of the work done recently on PennAvenue. The subgrade was taken out to a depth of 23 V2 in.below the grade of the finished street with a Thewelectric shovel and the material was loaded into Clarksteel dump cars. In operating the shovel a T-rail trackwas laid on the flank of the street, using the KerwinT-rail turnouts and crossovers to make connection tothe girder rail track at either end of the section wherework was in progress. These sections were usuallyabout 1000 ft. long. Traffic was diverted to this tem-porary track so that the old track adjacent to the onebeing graded could be
