Electrical Equipment of the Cars on This Line, Together with theMeans Taken to Overcome Them—A Curve Showing the Total Cost of Maintenance Is Included In the Electric Railway Journal for Jan. 31 anaccount was published of the early difficulties that wereexperienced with the single-phase car equipment of theNew York, Westchester & Boston Railway, togetherwith the means taken to overcome them. The previousarticle, however, dealt only with the mechanical featuresof apparatus, such as pantographs, air brakes, trucksand running gear, car bodies and interior fittings, and they were first put in service, namely, that they wererunning too cool. In order to overcome this the speedof the blower was reduced from 1800 r.p.m. to 1300r.p.m., thus reducing the supply of cooling air verymaterially. In addition, the decreased velocity of theair entering the blower eliminated the tendency to drawin with the air the drip from the sides of the car,the intake to the blower being made through louvers

Westchester Equipment—Typical Three-Car Train in the following paragraphs the experiences with thestrictly electrical equipment are taken up in detail. TRANSFORMERS The main transformer, which is placed under the carand which supplies current not only for the motors butalso for all the auxiliaries, such as heaters, motor-generator set, lighting, etc., originally gave sometrouble, much of which was difficult to trace to itsorigin. This has, however, been entirely overcome dur-ing the last year. A number of cases of burnt-outtransformers occurred on account of moisture whichentered on rainy days with the air from the forced-draft fan, thus injuring the insulation and groundingthe coils. The trouble has been eliminated by puttingbaffle-plates between the blower and the transformer, with an opening at the bottom of the casing so thatthe water can be drained out. A distinctly unusualcondition was found with these transformers when in the car side and through ducts to the fan. As theopenin
