Three years later the oper-ation of a steam dummy line was begun in Jersey City.This line was operated to the shore of the HudsonRiver first, but, as the city grew, operation was re-stricted more closely to outlying sections. The line,however, remained in operation until the eighties. Thefirst electric car to be operated on the entire system,as now constituted, was started experimentally in1889. It was operated by the Leo Daft system.Several cars were equipped with this system and oper-ated. In the meanwhile the Newark Rapid TransitRailway Company, which had been organized as anelectric railway, began construction and started theoperation of its lines in Newark on Oct. 25, 1890.The Springfield Avenue line in Newark had beenconverted previously from horse to cable power, andthis was converted for initial electrical operation onOct. 4, 1890.
