ascom, chief surgeon, and R. W. Morri-son, superintendent of the Wichita (Kan.) Railway of the trucks is 6 ft. 5 in. The overhang on each end of thecar from center of king pin to end of buffer face plate is11 ft. 6 in. The trucks are arranged to swing in the clearwithout interference on a 33-ft. center radius curve. Thecar is equipped with four GE-205 interpole motors, rated at100 hp each, with 600 volts at the motor terminals, and isgeared to 60 m.p.h., based on the above rating. The weightof the car without load is 90,000 lb. The interior of carNo. 233 is designed for use as a traveling office and is pro- 396 ELECTRIC RAILWAY JOURNAL. (Vol. XXXVIII, No. 10. vided with a forward observation room, a large diningroom and office, kitchen and serving room, toilet saloon anda large rear observation platform. Berths of Pullman sizeare provided for six people. From fourteen to twenty peo-ple were served with meals on each day of the trip, theregular porter having one assistant on this trip.

Illinois Traction Office Car—Attached to Rear End ofSteam Train This car is equipped with a number of recording instru-ments as follows: Sangamo trip and recording wattmeter,Weston ammeter, Weston voltmeter, Warner speedometer,train line and reservoir air gages and a standard shipschronometer. The speedometer gives a continuous indication of thespeed of the car and also shows trip and total mileages.This instrument was manufactured specially for car useand in appearance is similar to an automobile speedometer,except that it is larger. It is driven from the tread of oneof the forward car wheels. A 5-in. steel wheel supportedby a tension arm bolted to the upper truck frame is heldagainst the wheel tread by a coil spring. This frictionwheel drives a flexible shaft which extends up through thecar floor to the speedometer, which is mounted with theother instruments on the mahogany panels forming themotormans inclosure.
