Eis schluckt Licht in Abhängigkeit von Farbe/Wellenlänge. Rotes Licht wird von Eis am stärksten absorbiert, orangenes weniger, noch weniger grünes, und am wenigsten blaues Licht. Je größer die Wellenlänge, desto mehr Licht wird von Eis absorbiert. Gefrorenes Wasser wirkt wie ein schwacher Farbfilter. Das Eis schimmert blau, weil rotes, orangenes, gelbes und grünes Licht im Innern der Eisberge geschluckt wird. Dieser Farbeffekt wird als selektive Absorption bezeichnet. Die tiefere Ursache liegt im Aufbau der Eiskristalle: Die chemischen Bindungen im Kristallgitter absorbieren das Licht je nach Wellenlänge unterschiedlich stark – wie genau, hängt von den zahlreichen Eigenschwingungen der Bindungen ab und ist nach wie vor Gegenstand der Forschung. |
