Description |
Probably the portrait of Abdullah Efendi (1680?–1743). This clergyman of Greek descent was working at the court from 1718 as Shaykh al-Islām and was deposed after the Revolution of 1730. He was exiled, but returned to Istanbul in silence, where he died in 1743. Abdullah owned a large collection of legal and religious documents and was instrumental in the introduction of the printing press in the Ottoman Empire. |
