DescriptionEdith Anne Greene, d. 1912?.jpg |
English:
Edith Anne Greene (d. 1912?; see below) was a notable designer of late 19th-century bookplates, particularly for women; cf. N. Labouchere, Ladies' Book-Plates (London: G. Bell & Sons, 1895), p. 168-171, and H.W. Fincham, Artists and Engravers of British and American Bookplates (London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co., 1897), p. 37. By 1895 she was a member of the Ex Libris Society and resident at 14 Royal Park, Clifton, Bristol, England; cf. W. Hamilton, Dated Book-Plates (London: A&C Black, 1895), p. 113. (K.E. Graf zu Leiningen-Westerburg also locates her in "Clifton Bristol" in his 1901 Deutsche und Oesterreichische Bibliothekzeichen Exlibris; cf. p. 558.) According to a solicitor's notice in The London Gazette 2 July 1912, a woman of that name resident at 15 Hanbury-road, Clifton, Bristol, died on 25 May 1912. This appears to be one of at least two bookplates she designed for herself; cf. J.F. Verster and W.H.K. Wright, "List of Landscape Bookplates" in Journal of the Ex Libris Society 10 (1900), p. 147.
