Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The city of Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, and lies along the Firth of Forth. The area has been settled at least since the Bronze Age. By the 12th century Edinburgh was well established, centred around the castle rock. The city has maintained its mediaeval plan in the Old Town. In the 18th century the New Town was laid out to alleviate the problem of an increasingly crowded Old Town. It can be seen as a regular rectangular grid. The image was taken on 29 April 2006, covers an area of 16.5 x 25 km, and is located at 55.9 degrees north latitude, 3.2 degrees west longitude.

With its 14 spectral bands from the visible to the thermal infrared wavelength region and its high spatial resolution of 15 to 90 metres (about 50 to 300 feet), ASTER images Earth to map and monitor the changing surface of our planet. ASTER is one of five Earth-observing instruments launched on 18 December 1999, on Terra. The instrument was built by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. A joint U.S.–Japan science team is responsible for validation and calibration of the instrument and data products.
