Summary[edit]

Description
English: Early GE tungsten filament incandescent light bulb from around 1908, 100 watt, 120 V, produced 80 candlepower. Tungsten filaments replaced the Edison carbon filament in light bulbs in the early 20th century, because they had a longer lifetime and used less energy. In 1904 Sandor Just and Franjo Hanaman in Hungary invented the tungsten bulb. GE began making them in 1906. As in today's bulbs, several feet of filament was needed per bulb, but these early filaments didn't have the "coiled coil" structure which allows todays filaments to be compact, so the filament consisted of several long loops connected in series, supported by the elaborate wire structure in the center.
