Summary[edit]

Description

One of six small ambrotypes picked up from an antique's fair and flea market in Wadebridge, Cornwall - in one day I've managed to almost double my collection!

This one cost me just £7. Hardly in great condition, with damaged emulsion and (not unrelated!) no mat or cover glass. It's such a shame that one piece of missing emulsion is over the cheek/eye area. But the image intrigues me, and I sense it's quite early, possibly early/mid 1850s. The other question is whether there are any clues as to origin.

It's a standard ninth-plate size (2 x 2.5"). It is housed in one half of a folding case, the other half being missing.

The back has the typical black varnish but this has over time fused with the brown paper lining of the case. I'm going to treat this one as a first attempt at very basic restoration, and will post more pictures along the way.

By the way, this is a very hasty upload of a picture from my mobile phone. In due course I'll make a better scan.
