Title
Early Medieval silver strap end (back)
Description
English: A large cast silver strap-end with zoomorphic decoration and glass settings. The strap-end is leaf-shaped, flaring from the transverse attachment end and then tapering towards the rounded terminal. The attachment end is split to take a strap, and pierced by two silver dome-headed rivets. The end is lobed around the rivets with a small pointed peak in between.

The main part of the strap-end is decorated extensively with Trewhiddle Style ornament. At the attachment end, below the rivets, is a recessed pelta-shaped field containing a central incised teardrop motif. Beneath this is a large panel dominated by two confronting birds, shown in profile with their heads at the attachment end and their tails at the terminal. Their bodies are decorated with incised details emphasising their shape. Their beaks are open wide and their tongues extend outwards to cross in an X-shape in the centre of the strap end, before crossing the opposite bird's neck and ending in a curled terminal at the edge of the frame. Each bird has a narrow neck and rounded chest, behind which is a long slender wing which curves downwards and bifurcates into thin tendrils with scrolled ends. The wings cross over and elongated tail which extends down to the base of the frame, where it meets an upturned crescent motif linked to a central lozenge-shaped motif with its point upwards. Each bird also has a short leg extending from the base of the rounded chest, with feet represented by incised lines. The feet rest upon a reversed animal mask, shown frontally, in the centre of the main field. The creature has two long ears which curl towards the edge of the frame, crossing behind the birds' tails and ending in a scroll. At its forehead is an incised pelat motif, beneath which is a straight incised nose meeting what appears to be an open mouth. From this extends an elongated lozenge, extending upwards to the attachment end, perhaps representing a tongue or breath, or a plant tendril. Above the animal's head, between its ears, is a bifurcating tendril motif. The birds and the reversed beast head all have drilled eyes, now empty but probably originally set with glass inlays.

The strap-end terminal is in the form of an animal's head with oval-shaped ears emphasised with three recessed lunate motifs. Its brow and head are further emphasised with incised lines. It has a pair of circular eyes set within elongated recessed fields, each eye set with small glass cabochon inlays.

The back of the strap-end is flat and plain. It is likely that the recessed ornament on the front was originally inlaid extensively with niello.
