Title
Early Medieval Spindle Whorl
Description
English: Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a medial moulded aperture of diameter 7.5mm with a larger upper and a smaller lower flat faces, Walton Rogers form A2. The object is unusually thin and well finished. A line of faint punch marks follows the outer edge on the upper surface, possibly produced by teeth and perhaps even signalling the temporary conversion of spinster's whorl to teething ring. The mass may suggest a primary function plying cord. The aperture size would allow an Anglo-Saxon date. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 700-850.

Diameter: 34mm, Thickness: 7.8mm, Weight: 65.38gms.
